Why Workplace Mental Well-being Matters More Than Ever Before

In recent years, the importance of mental well-being in the workplace has gained recognition. Research has shown the potential consequences of neglecting mental health, such as decreased productivity, high turnover rates, and negative impacts on employee morale.

One of the key reasons why workplace mental wellbeing is vital is that mental health issues are prevalent in the workplace. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression and anxiety disorders are common mental health conditions that affect millions of people worldwide. The WHO estimates that the global economy loses one trillion dollars every year due to depression and anxiety alone.

When employees are struggling with their mental health, they are likely to be less productive and produce lower-quality work, or even leave the organization in search of a more supportive work environment. Additionally, neglecting mental health can lead to a negative work culture, where employees feel unsupported and undervalued, ultimately impacting the organization's bottom line.

Therefore, neglecting workplace mental health can be costly for organizations. However, by supporting workplace mental health and creating a positive work environment, organizations can benefit from engaged, productive, and committed employees who contribute to their success.

Some of the recent research shows:
  • Every $1 spent on creating a mentally healthy workplace results in a return of $4 in improved health and productivity (World Health Organization, 2021). Companies with a strong focus on employee mental health and well-being outperformed their peers by 10% in terms of revenue growth (Harvard Business Review, 2021).
  • Employees with mental health support had a 31% higher engagement level and a 37% higher productivity level than those without (Deloitte Insights, 2021).
  • Companies with effective mental well-being support programs see an average of 28% reduction in sick leave absenteeism, 26% reduction in healthcare costs (American Psychological Association, 2022), and 40% reduction in burnout rates (Gallup, 2022) as well as 24% increase in employee retention rates (World Economic Forum, 2021).

Clearly, prioritizing employee well-being has significant benefits for both employees and organizations. But how can organizations support their employees' mental well-being?

  1. Provide Mental Health Resources, such as an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), counseling services, or mental health training. This will ensure employees have the support and resources they need to maintain their mental well-being.
  2. Promote Work-Life Balance by encouraging employees to take breaks, offering flexible work arrangements, and setting realistic expectations for workload. By promoting work-life balance, organizations can help reduce stress and burnout, leading to a more productive and engaged workforce.
  3. Create a Positive Work Culture by promoting open communication, valuing diversity and inclusion, and recognizing employee contributions. A positive work culture helps employees feel supported and valued, leading to increased morale, job satisfaction, and productivity.
